Cassel

A few weeks ago, when spring was still stopping by here ;) we decided to go for a walk in Cassel.
It had been on our to do-list for years but somehow we never got there. Cassel is a town in France,
in French Flanders, close to the border with Belgium, close to where we live.
We had heard it's a pretty town to go for a walk and to admire the views from the top
because Cassel is on a hill, mount Cassel, from which I can tell now,
you have a terrific view over the whole surrounding area.
Cassel was once a fortified town as so many towns in the area, remember Bergues.

Tulips weren't blooming yet when we were there but this board tells a bit about
the history of the tulip in French Flemish, a language only spoken by
the oldest inhabitants of French Flanders now, very similar to West Flemish.

'den tuulypen andjoen' ooit 'azo kostlik of twee huuzen' was.

View from the Casselberg.

Zicht vanop de Casselberg.

No problem to orientate yourself from mount Cassel.
All around the top of the hill you find these direction indicators.

And these are just a few of the cities indicated.

This is the still working mill on Mount Cassel, called 'Castle Mill'.
I was never so close to a working mill before.
Quite impressive to stand so close to the rotating blades.
It's a grainmill that was once part of a castle that stood on the hill
but nothing is left of the castle nowadays.

Another view from mount Cassel.

En nog een zicht vanop de Casselberg.

The statue of the French Marshal Foch who had his headquarters here
during WWI and who led the first battle of Ypres and the battle of the Ijzer from here.

A lot of possibilities for walks in and around the town and hill.

An angel in the sky, a beautiful blue sky, part of a war memorial monument in town.

Een engel tegen een prachtig blauwe lucht. Deel van een oorlogsherdenkingsmonument in de stad.

Views from a short walk around and in town.

This was Cassel on a bright Spring day.

Dit was Cassel op een mooie lentedag.

  2. Hallo Marian,

  4. Cassel looks a lovely place to wander with its magnificent windmill.
I couldn't read your sign about tulips, but I had always thought that the tulip originated in the Netherlands. When we were in Turkey we discovered that they came from the Ottoman Empire to Holland, and in fact Iznik Turkish pottery dating to 1500s is often covered in tulips.

    1. Although Cassel, as we could notice, attracts a lot of people on a sunny sunday, the small town somehow keeps its peace and quiet.
You're right, the tulip was brought to Europe from Turkey, that's where it originates and we all know Holland was and is famous for its tulips. Apparently not only Holland was into growing tulips then; new to me as well. The text also refers to the famous Dutch tulip 'Semper Augustus' that was sold for an unbelievable price, the price of two houses it says on the sign although I always thought it was the price of one house but well. It also mentions the book of Alexandre Dumas 'The black tulip' that was inspired by the tulip mania in Holland in the 17th century(the Dutch Golden Age).

  5. Mooi, zo'n wandeling Marian.

Helemaal goed natuurlijk!
      Lieve groet,
      Marian

  6. Always fun to see parts of Europe I haven't seen before, I always love the signs, our signs are so industrial while these have moss growing on them or are faded and lovely with time.

    1. It's probably not a place anyone coming to Europe from other parts of the world would visit either. There are much more famous places to visit in that case. So I'm glad you loved and appreciated it Barbara. These weathered signs are typical for France, or at least 'Le Nord', can't speak for the other parts of France, I guess. Here in Belgium the signs are all more modern/recent as well.
      Bye,
      Marian

  7. Seems to be a wonderful spot to walk to with views into the far distance, quite a history lesson too.
