Dramatic skies

The English text is in Italic under the Dutch text.

This whole month of july
hasn't really felt like summer
and blue skies are totally
out of the picture.
Still, there are sometimes
dramatic skies that may not predict
the best of weather
but are nevertheless beautiful I think.
These skies appear mostly early in the evening.
Not the easiest skies to photograph I discovered.
The sun, although we say 'she's not there',
she really is, even if she is hiding behind the clouds,
often makes the pictures look too bright
and at first my camera just didn't want to work with me
but somehow I managed to develop my own trick
to get that sky photo afterall.
I just focus on the churchtower or on our neighbours tree first
and then slightly move the camera upwards
so most of the picture consists of sky
and click.
That seems to do it.
Don't ask me to explain this scientifically.
I don't know why that works
but it does,
well, for me and my camera at least ;-)
Hope you enjoy my dramatic skies.

Bye,
Marian

    Hele fijne dag!

    Lieve groet, Loes

  3. Dear Marian - there are always other compensations for the lack of long hot sunny days, and your lovely photos of the evening sky show us that. Do hope that you are now feeling better.

  5. Beautiful skies, yes you were exposing for the church, which is dark and maked your camera read that and not the sky. When you increased your exposure by the little ticks you see in the meter you are uping the exposure to give you more light. That way you got the silhouette of the church and trees and the skies remained their beauty. That is why I like manual exposure you are telling the camera what to do and not it telling you. You did really good here and made a beautiful image. There is always a never learning curve with our instruments. :)

    1. I already thought you would be the one able to give me the scientific explanation. Thanks for that. I don't have a dslr camera though, so I don't quite understand it all(the meter?) but I don't take pictures in intelligent auto either, so I have to do something with the camera. I often change things so the pictures come out better but I don't exactly know yet what I'm doing, I really should take a course once. I have started reading about photography though. Just have to find where everything in and on my bridge camera is. I do want to know more about it and at least know everything about the camera I have before buying an other more sophisticated camera.
      Bye,

  12. Hi Marian, That first photo is incredible! Very dramatic and stunning clouds. You did just the right thing on getting the exposure. It's a tricky lighting situation but your photos are beautiful. I hope you have sunny days ahead! – g
