Capturing the moment

Photography to me is often capturing the moment when it occurs,
being there with the camera at the right time.
Over the last few weeks, I was so fortunate to capture
some of those moments in our garden at different times.
Sometimes it was early in the evening, and other times early in the morning.
It seems like those are the moments to capture a bit of magic in the garden.

I showed these before
but one evening I noticed this

Guess I caught the flowers at
the time they were closing their petals
for the night but hadn't closed completely yet.
Little stars in the border
but only visable at the right moment
and if you want to notice it
because these little flowers can so easily be overlooked.

Love this natural combination of what looks like
the tiniest forget-me-nots and the blue flowers.
Both happy surprises in the garden.

No flower here anymore
but if you've been following me for a while,
you will know I love taking pictures of
faded flowers and seed pods as well.
They're all so pretty and elegant if you ask me.

Early one  morning, I noticed this.
Just one Californian poppy, sleeping cap still on.
I had to look close to see what it exactly was.
Thought it funny and cute enough to especially
go back inside for and grab my camera.
Glad I did, never got the chance afterwards
to photograph the actual flower.

And then there was that second surprise poppy.

Photographed it from all angles again ;)

More Columbine seed pods.

There was even the promise of a third surprise poppy
but that didn't come true.

The first rain drops were gentle but....

I have to admit this is a post I started more than a week ago
when the weather was still great, sunny, not enough rain maybe,
and a lot of watering needed but o how I loved those warm
and sunny days. By now we've gotten more than enough
sky water, more than there normally falls in the whole month of July
and we're not even halfway through this month. No need to say
the last week has changed the garden into what seems like
another world compared to what it looked like when I took
the above pictures. Wind and rain even got to the container garden,
blowing things over and making me work outside in the pouring rain
(it just didn't stop once!) to get it all reorganized and cleaned up again.
Think I'd choose watering over that any day ;)

So glad I captured these summer moments,
they came and passed so fast
but are now captured to be shared.
Hope you enjoy them,
these little happy surprises.
I'm glad I did.

New summer crochet project

Today has been all about wind and rain,
ideal for some catch up blogging and
a new summer crochet project I started
after I first finished last year's one ;)
I didn't touch it all winter,
had no winter crochet project either,
just let crochet be crochet for a while
and didn't do any of that kind of stuff then.
I did have an Autumn project remember,
but Spring went by so fast I didn't have
time for crochet projects then.
Seems like, in my life as it is now,
crochet projects are something for Summer
and Fall ;)

This is the finished wavey throw from last year's
summer crochet project. It will always remind
me of that song 'wave after wave' now ;) and vice versa.
The picture beneath was taken today inside on a dark day,
the one above on a bright day outside.
Hence the difference in colourtone.
Tried to make it more alike in photoscape
but without much success.
O, and I really have a question for all you native English speaking people.
What's the difference between a throw, an afghan, a blanket and a plaid,
or are those different names for the same thing?

I decided on a really simple edging. At first I thought I'd
make a crochet edging as you read here but that just
didn't look pretty, too thick, so in the end I made a simple edging
of four rows of single crochet, crocheting the third row
in the behind loops of the stitches from the previous row of sc.

For the new summer crochet project(scp), I decided to use all the
leftover bits of yarn from the previous scp. Just bought more of
the white yarn because I'll need a lot of that.

The inspiration for this project came from Petals to Picots.
I fell immediately in love with this afghan and saw the possibilities
with the leftover yarn I had. Instead of using always the same colour
for the first row, I decided to use the different leftover colours,
the white would be perfect for the second and third rows and then
I had quite some grey yarn leftover to crochet the edges and join the flowers.

I did have to adjust the pattern a bit.
The first row is the same as described in the original pattern:
First make a magic ring. Then Ch 2 (counts as 1st dc), work 1 dc in the ring, ch 1, *2 dc in ring, ch 1,
rep from * 4 more times, join in top of beginning ch 2, fasten off.

REMARK You may have noticed I only chain two to begin with and count these as one double crochet. Normally, and in the original pattern, you have to chain three to count as one double crochet stitch. I chain two because it looked prettier with the specific yarn I use(the cheap 100% acryl Royal yarn by Zeeman btw). Maybe with other yarn it would be more appropriate to chain three. You have to decide that for yourself. I have to say I pretty much always only chain two to count as one double crochet. But you can chain three if that works better for you of course.

The second row goes as follows:
Join the colour you want to use for row two and three in any ch-1 sp from the first row,
ch 2(or 3, see my previous remark) (counts as 1st dc), work [1 dc, ch 3, 2 dc] in
same ch-sp as color was joined, * [2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc] in next ch-1 sp,
rep from * 4 more times

2L(of 3L, zie mijn eerdere opmerking)
(telt als 1S), haak [1S, 3L, 2S] in diezelfde L-lus, *[2S,3L,2S] in de
volgende L-lus, herhaal 4 keer vanaf *.

The third row goes as follows:
Sl st in next ch-3 sp, ch 2(or 3, see my previous remark)  (counts as 1st dc),
work 6 dc in same ch-sp, *ch 1, work 7 dc in next ch-3 sp,  rep from * 4 more times,
ch 1, join in top of beginning ch 2(or 3), fasten off .

I think if you use rather thin yarn for this pattern, you should use the
original pattern as described on Petals and Picots,
but with thicker yarn as the yarn I use, the adjusted pattern I wrote down
will give a better result.

Another remark. Do join the flowers as described on Petals and Picots,
it is better than any other way of joining.
It is the first time I use this method and the result is so pretty.
The big difference is you drop the loop from the hook, insert the hook into the sc
from the other flower you want to join to and then pull the loop through.

So there you go. Bit long maybe and technical but who knows,
maybe this can inspire you to a scp as well ;)
If there are any more questions, I'll be happy to answer them.
And while rain keeps falling and wind keeps blowing, and weather is more
Autumn like than Summer, I know again why I should always have a
crochet project on hand during the Summer ;)

Happy new week everyone,

Fijne nieuwe week iedereen,
