Arras under a grey sky on a late july afternoon

When we left Louvre-Lens (see my previous post), although the sky was looking very threatening still, the rain had stopped and we decided to drive on to Arras (our original plan) and walk its streets afterall.

Grand'Place, Arras

Place des Héros, Arras

It was the first time I was in Arras and I have to say I was truly amazed by the many, many typical Flemish houses on the two major squares of Arras, which are Grand'Place and Place des Héros, also called petite place.  I knew Arras is famous for those houses but honestly, I really didn't expect to see so many of these typical houses lined up next to eachother, leaning against eachother, all around both squares. Even in Flanders, you can't find that many of these typical houses together. Arras is not a part of French Flanders by the way. Arras is part of Artois, once a county and historic province of the kingdom of France. Arras was once called Atrecht, which is the Dutch name for Arras. Arras is one of the main cities in Artois. O, and you have to pronounce the final 's' in Arras, unlike most French words ending on 's' ;)

Despite the threatening sky, there were palmtrees and a beach on the Grand' Place which was transformed into the local beach for the summer with children playing in the sand on swings and other fun outdoor playsets. That didn't make it easy to get the rows of houses on photo as I wanted it but it did give the town square a summer and holiday look even if the weather was dark and grey.

Arras has PhilipII(of Spain) to thank for its town squares with the typical look and the many typical houses with stone pilarred arcades. In the sixteenth century PhilipII forbid building wooden houses in the town of Arras and also there could not be any overhang over the streets. These were safety measures but he also wanted to embellish the town and also have as many houses as possible right around the market places to be able to have as many traders as possible right on the market place who, with the arcades, had a perfect place to display their goods as well. The result of these strict regulations was an architectural ensemble of 155 houses in Flemish Baroque style which is unique in Europe.

Visiting Arras and learning more about its history, I was amazed at how similar that history is to the history of Ypres. Both Ypres and Arras were a center of wool and cloth industry and trading in the middle ages. Arras became particularly well known for its production of fine tapestries. So much so even that in English and Italian the word Arras (Arrazi in Italian) was used to refer to tapestries in general.

Another thing Arras and Ypres have in common is that they were both almost completely destroyed during the first world war. There has even been the same discussion about rebuilding the city or leaving it in ruins as a constant reminder. Eventually, same as in Ypres, the decision was made to rebuild the historic buildings as they were before the war, using photographs and archive documents to do so. In Arras, Pierre Paquet, the chief architect responsible for France's national monuments, was given that huge task, in Ypres, Jules Coomans, the city architect who had also been responsible for the restoration of historic buildings in Ypres before the war, was given the task. In both cities the rebuilding was finished in the 1930's. If you want to, you can see and read more about Ypres in this post I made a few years ago.

In the streets leading away from the town squares in Arras, the houses weren't rebuilt in medieval style and there are some beautiful examples of art deco to be found there. We didn't really walk very far from the center squares and other main historical buildings but still I noticed a bit of art deco here and there and houses that drew my attention like the one in the picture above.

Love the shutters, the large windows, the elegant balcony and the colours used.

Typical art deco decorations.

Typische art deco decoraties.

A bit of colour for this bakery on the corner of a street. The building really stands out from the rest of the buildings. Apparently the blue ceramic pieces in this building were made by two famous Parisian ceramists, Alphonse Gentil and François-Eugène Bourdet.

Really loved the detail above the windows in this building. Pity about the dried up flowers on the window sill though.

Hope you enjoyed this post with a first view of Arras.
But even though we didn't have time to see all of Arras, I still have more to show you.
To be continued!

Flowers in the sun on sunday

In the last post I showed you flowers in the rain in july, now it's only fair that I show you flowers in the sun because that's how
august started off, with some beautiful sunny days. I took all these pictures yesterday afternoon.

Stealing the show on our terrace are the white Echinacea, looking so much more vibrant in the sun.

Tried to photograph them from a different angle so I got the blue sky into the picture as well.
I love a blue sky!

Did the same again with this second Dahlia flower of this summer.
Love these smaller pomponlike Dahlia flowers, ideal for containers.

More pink from the rose 'Bailando'.

Meer roze van de roos 'Bailando'.

But as I said you can't go past these at the moment.
They want all the attention and they deserve it don't you think?

Remember this first Dahlia flower in the rain?
This is the exact same flower in the sun this time
and still the only flower on this particular dahlia plant.

The finale of this post just had to be a white Echinacea flower,
bathing in the sunlight.

Have a great new week everyone!

Fijne nieuwe week iedereen!

Flowers in the rain

This past month of july, although it started off with some heatwave days, has been mostly about rain, wind and weather that had more to do with Autumn than Summer.
Probably why we had to wait until the very last days of july to have the first dahlia blooming. The dahlias will be a surprise this year, except for the ones I still have from last year, as I bought a mix of tubers again. Yesterday the first dahlia flower opened its petals ever so slowly. Large dark petals appeared and a little bit of white in the center, not a huge bloom, not a flower filled with petals but o so pretty I think. What do you think? Do you like dahlias? Do you ever let yourself be surprised and buy a mix of tubers? Do you like these kind of single dahlias or only the large filled blooms? I'd love to hear.

If there's one flower that adores this colder and wet weather then it's the Hydrangea. While they weren't looking all that great in their containers at the beginning of july, this weather certainly revived them.

Roses aren't that fond of rain, they like their leaves and petals dry. The constant rain had its consequences for the roses. A lot of rosebuds just fell off. First time that happened and when I looked for answers I learned that wet conditions lead to this. But still the roses didn't give up and neither did I. I tried to capture the healthy looking blooms all covered in raindrops.

This is the first Acropolis rose flower trying to bloom but it still hasn't opened up completely by now.

Here's Rhapsody in blue in the rain.
Love that colour!

Hier is Rhapsody in blue in de regen.
Prachtige kleur vind ik dit!

From all the roses I have, this rose endures the rain the best. It's Leersum 700.

Also 'Leersum 700'

This rose lost most of its rosebuds and is probably
the least rain enduring rose in my collection of roses.
It is such a beauty though. The roses aren't that big
but the red is amazing.
It's called 'Rotkäppchen',
'Little red riding hood' if you'd translate that in English.

Haar naam is 'Rotkäppchen', of 'Roodkapje' dus.

'Marie Curie'

Another small rose, called 'Bailando'.

Nog een kleinere soort rozen, 'Bailando' genoemd.

'Bailando'

'Schneewittchen'

'Nostalgie'
I thought this was a sturdy rose but my experience is it doesn't take wet conditions
as well as other roses I have. Not the best rose for a container maybe.

'Nostalgie'

Whether in rain or sunshine, the colour of this rose stays amazing.
This is 'Munstead wood'.

Last but not least, a newcomer in my container rose garden,
this is 'Lavender ice'. First time it's blooming.

Dit is een nieuwkomer in mijn rozenpottentuin.
'Lavender ice', bloeit voor het eerst.

Also 'Lavender ice'.
It lost a lot of rosebuds as well so I'm really glad it is blooming afterall.

Other flowers don't mind the rain as much as they do the wind.
I had to provide support for my white Echinacea in a container.
I've had it for years and it's been
part of my header for more than a year now.
Somehow pink Echinacea are never a success.

And look at these little crabapples, starting to show some colour.
First sign Autumn is on its way? Or is it here already?
This weekend should be beautiful weatherwise.
Let's hope august brings us back summer.
I wish you all a lovely weekend!

Fijn weekend iedereen!

The summer sofar

Thank you so much for the comments on my previous post! I now also know the name of the cloudy like plant which is Cotinus. A lot of you knew this. Thank you for telling me! Before I show you more of Monet's garden, I'd like to share some pictures of what's blooming in our garden now. It's not a lot. No idea what the weather in your parts is but here it's not really summer as it should be. It's cold, grey, a lot of wind and every now and then a good shower. Probably also why none of the annuals I sowed are growing as they should and none are blooming. It's also still waiting for the Dahlia's to start blooming and the roses haven't started their second bloom after their wonderful blooming period in june.

This Hydrangea doesn't mind this weather at all but I desperately need sun, lots of it. I feel so weary with this kind of weather. Do you sometimes have that feeling of really needing sun? And of a trip to somewhere, being away from it all! This is the second summer in a row without a vacation somewhere and it feels awful, especially with this weather.
Luckily I do have the pictures of Monet's garden to fall back on and
heave a sigh of relief from time to time ;)

I thought this Allium Sphaerocephalon would have bloomed in Spring
but no, it waited until now and it attracts bees as no other plant.
Never seen anything like it.

I do love this kind of Allium. It was by accident it ended up in a container here.
The bulbs came together with some tulip bulbs I bought last fall which have long faded by now.

And that's it for 'what's blooming in our garden'.

Allium Christophii

The garden now

Happy first day of Summer everyone. It feels more like an Autumn day here with rain and wind and temperatures that haven't really been high enough over the last month. The rain is welcome though because even though it hasn't been warm enough for this time of year, we didn't get any rain for a loooong time, never happened as far as I can remember. The grass was turning from green into yellow and looked more like straw and I had to water the border, as well as the many potted plants I have, even if there's not much going on in the garden right now, but still, I wouldn't want to jeopardize what is going on there. Also I have sowed some things I think might not mind the shade and the not so terrific conditions in our garden but that's still a wait and see. Anyway, there's a big cloud of pink going on now in the garden, called Geranium Endressii and I took some photos to share with you. Nothing much maybe but well, it's something and I'm glad with it.

A cloud of little pink flowers with some green seedpods from Columbines
sticking out above them here and there

Not a garden to pick colourful bouquets
but I'm already glad there's something blooming
and colourful going on,
even if it's all one and the same thing.
Someone told me our garden looks very peaceful,
and that's also a way to look at it I guess.

So what's going on in your garden at the moment?
