Let's talk about.... tulips.... wild ones

 

A few years ago I had some beautiful light pink double tulips in a pot outside,

Angélique I believe they were called. So when I saw light pink double tulips

still in the bud on the market, I bought some. Pity I didn't take a picture of the

tulips as a comparison to what they finally became.

Enkele jaren geleden had ik prachtige lichtroze dubbele tulpen in pot buiten,

Angélique heetten ze denk ik en prachtig waren ze, het leken wel rozen.

Dus toen ik op de markt lichtroze dubbele tulpen in knop zag,

twijfelde ik geen moment en bracht er een bos van mee naar huis.

Jammer dat ik geen foto nam van de tulpen toen ik ze pas kocht al was het maar om

te kunnen vergelijken met hoe ze er uiteindelijk gingen uitzien eens in volle bloei.

What an amazing transformation that was.

Wat een transformatie was me dat!

 
 

As the tulips grew in the vase and started to bloom,
they were double tulips allright, but not at all the light delicate pink I had expected.

Het waren dan wel dubbele tulpen maar het delicate lichtroze dat ik verwachtte
was helemaal niet wat te voorschijn kwam.


 

They turned out to be bright pink with yellow centers.

Het bleken felroze tulpen te zijn met een geel hart.



Not the tulips I had in mind but hey, still tulips.

Niet de tulpen die ik in gedachten had maar hoedanook tulpen.

Laatste week voor Kerst/ Last week before Christmas

Ongelooflijk dat het al de laatste week voor Kerst is. Kerst komt dit jaar precies te vroeg, ben er nog helemaal niet klaar voor. Vorige week was er wel even een sprankel kerstgevoel toen het enkele nachten vroor en de wereld 's morgens een wit randje had. Mooi vind ik dat altijd.

 

Unbelievable Christmas is already around the corner, only one week left!

I don't feel ready for Christmas yet, as if it comes too soon this year.

Last week, there was a bit of a Christmas feeling after we had some nights with

temps blow zero which gave the world a white edging in the mornings.

Always such a pretty view.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Deze week ontbreekt dat witte randje en weg kerstgevoel, al steek ik dan de lichtjes in de kerstboom (boompje eigenlijk) buiten aan, en al staat de Amaryllis bijna in bloei. Ik hoop hier binnenkort foto's van een bloeiende Amaryllis te kunnen delen maar voorlopig blijven de stelen groeien en laten de knoppen nog niets van de bloemkleur(die wit zou moeten zijn) zien. De Amaryllis is er ook nog niet klaar voor denk ik, voor Kerst.

 

This week there hasn't been a white edging though and with it all Christmas feeling disappeared as well, even if I do turn on the lights in the Christmas tree outside. And even if the Amaryllis is almost blooming. The stems keep growing but the flowerbuds are tightly closed and don't want to reveal any colour(should be white btw). It seems as if Amaryllis isn't ready for Christmas yet either.

 

 

 

 

Niet zo voor de kerstroos. Die staat wél in bloei, helemaal klaar voor Kerst.

 

Not so for the Christmas Rose, blooming and ready for Christmas.

 

 

 

  Toch al een klein hoekje Kerst in de woonkamer.

En deze brownies (recept) hebben ook wel iets kerstigs, met cranberries erin verwerkt én op een mooi wit papieren kantje.

 

These brownies (recipe) have something Christmassy about them as well, with the added cranberries and presented on a white lacey paper.

 

 

Geen idee of ik nog wat zal bloggen voor Kerst dus vandaar nu al mijn allerbeste wensen voor een mooie en vreugdevolle kerstperiode voor iedereen

Fall

 

 

 

Fall has really arrived here today

and is not planning on leaving any time soon

if we can believe the weatherman.

So I started to add some fall decorations in the house

like this this little pumpkin I crocheted last year.

And I have been baking several apple cakes

and banana breads over the last weeks,

didn't take any pictures though.

I do want to share the recipes I use with you nevertheless.

The apple cake comes from the book 'Ons kookboek',

the old version, and is exactly the same as this recipe

I found on the intermet, it's in Dutch I'm afraid.

If you'd like an English translation just let me know.

Next on my to bake list? An American apple pie!

Who knows, maybe I will take pictures this time....

 

De herfst is hier echt wel gearriveerd vandaag

en is niet van plan vlug weer te vertrekken

als we de weerman mogen geloven.

Daarom ben ik begonnen met wat herfsttouches aan te brengen in huis

zoals dit kleine pompoentje dat ik vorig jaar haakte.

De laatste weken heb ik ook al verschillende appelcakes

en bananenbroden gebakken die er in deze periode van het jaar

gewoon bij horen. Geen foto's ervan echter.

Wel deel ik graag de recepten met jullie. Wie weet komen ze ooit van pas.

Als je ook het bananenbrood wil bakken dat ik altijd bak,

hier vind je het recept, een super recept als je 't mij vraagt.

De appelcake komt uit het boek 'Ons kookboek', de oude versie ervan,

en is precies hetzelfde als dit recept dat ik op internet tegen kwam.

Volgende op mijn te bakken lijst is een Amerikaanse appelpie!

Summer crochet project

 

 

From some yarn I still had lying around I wanted to make a crochet blanket.

Something colourful and not something that would require a lot of assembling

afterwards. I still have a whole stack of squares I crocheted several years ago,

waiting to be assembled.... So no, this time, it had to be a blanket that was crocheted

row after row in different colours but not just straight rows of DC stitches either,

and I wanted it to be a rather closed blanket, not something with a lot of holes in it, not

the lacey kind of blanket. As you can see, there were quite some conditions that had

to be met before I could start crocheting without hesitation. But then recently I came

upon the blog of Annette, My Rose Valley, and there it was, the perfect blanket I wanted to make with the yarn that had been waiting and waiting to be used. My summer crochet

project was a fact. I will be showing you the progress throughout the whole summer.

I hope this blanket will have a happy end and be able to keep us warm

on next winter's cold evenings.

 

 Van breiwol die ik nog liggen had, wou ik al een tijd een deken haken.

Het moest iets kleurrijks worden en iets dat geen aan elkaar haken zou nodig hebben

achteraf. Ik heb namelijk nog een stapel vierkanten liggen die al enkele jaren wachten

om eindelijk eens tot een deken samengehaakt te worden.... Dus dit keer wou ik dat niet,

het moest een deken worden die in één trek door, rij na rij, in verschillende kleuren

gehaakt werd maar toch ook niet zomaar rechte rijen van stokjes na elkaar; en ik wou

een eerder gesloten deken, niet iets met veel gaten in, niets kantachtigs. Zoals je merkt,

er waren best wat voorwaarden die voldaan moesten worden vooraleer ik kon starten met haken. Maar een tijdje geleden kwam ik op de blog van Annette, My Rose Valley, terecht, en daar vond ik precies de deken die ik zocht, de deken die ik wou gaan maken. Dit zou mijn zomerhaakproject worden. Ik zal jullie regelmatig de vorderingen laten zien en ik hoop dat dit haakproject tot een goed einde gebracht zal worden en ons volgende winter lekker warm zal houden op koude winteravonden.

Philadelphus Coronarius

 

 

 

Ook wel Boerenjasmijn genoemd en nu, eind juni, volop in bloei. Net als met alle andere planten is dat dit jaar veel later dan normaal. In mijn vorige post vertelde ik al hoe ik een paar takken van de Boerenjasmijn binnen zette. Die lange takken heb ik uiteindelijk toch maar wat ingekort om een mooi boeket ervan op de tafel in de woonkamer te kunnen zetten én te genieten van de heerlijke geur tijdens het computeren ;) En nu vond  ik dat ik niets anders kon dan hier toch wat foto's te plaatsen van dit gerestylde boeket.

Also known as 'Sweet mock orange' or 'English Dogwood' and now flowering abundantly, at the very end of june, much later than normal, as is the case for all plants this year. In my previous post I told you how I put some Mock Orange branches in the house. I eventually shortened the long branches afterall to end up with a more manageable bouquet, suitable to put on the table in the living room and enjoy its beauty and wonderful smell while spending time behind the computer ;) And I thought I just had to share some pictures of that 'restyled' bouquet.

 

 

 

En uiteraard moest ik ook wat close-ups uitproberen.

 

And of course I had to try some close-up pictures as well.

It's summer

 

Het is zomer!

 

 

If I told you this picture was taken outside in the garden, wouldn't you believe it?

 

Als ik je zei dat deze foto buiten in de tuin genomen is, zou je het dan geloven?

 

 

Well, it's not really. But I did cut some branches of the Mock orange bush (Philadelphus) that's just starting to bloom and being slapped all over the place by the wind. I put the branches in the largest vase I could find and they're now brightening up the kitchen. 

With this winter weather, baking some muffins is the perfect thing to do on a saturday afternoon, isn't it? And so I did. The kids were still studying for their last exams of this week and the muffins were much appreciated. I used this recipe and it's a keeper. The result was sublime: lovely, tasty and moist muffins.

 

Dat is niet het geval hoor. Maar ik knipte wel enkele takken van de Boerenjasmijn die net begint te bloeien en die van her naar der geblazen wordt door de vele wind. Voor de best wel grote takken zocht ik mijn grootste vaas uit en nu pronken ze in de keuken.

Met dit winterweer is muffins bakken op een zaterdagnamiddag het beste wat je kan doen lijkt me. En dat deed ik dan ook. De kinderen waren voor hun laatste examens van deze week aan het studeren en ze konden de muffins wel appreciëren. Ik gebruikte dit recept en het is er ééntje om bij te houden. Het resultaat was subliem: mooie en vooral lekkere, smeuïge muffins.

 

 

I used frozen raspberries in the muffins. These strawberries add to the summer feel though don't they? I absolutely love both, raspberries and strawberries. From all fruit, berries are absolutely my favourite. Do you have a favourite fruit?

 

In de muffins gebruikte ik diepgevroren frambozen. Deze aardbeien zorgen toch voor een zomers gevoel, niet? Ik hou van allebei, frambozen en aardbeien. Van alle fruit, zijn bessen toch echt mijn favorieten. Welk fruit is bij jou favoriet?

 

 

The Mock orange smells wonderfully and it's so nice to be able to enjoy it; if not possible outside, then inside the house anyway.

 

De Boerenjasmijn geurt heerlijk en het is leuk er toch van te kunnen genieten; als dat buiten niet mogelijk is, dan toch binnen.

 

 

Not so easy to take good photo's inside though but with all the wind, taking photo's outside wouldn't even be possible.

 

Het is niet zo makkelijk binnen mooie foto's te maken maar buiten zou dat met de vele wind al helemaal niet mogelijk zijn.

o so white

First of all I wanted to say how I love
all your comments on my previous post.
I think there's a bit of a Sherlock
in every one us one way or the other.
Today I thought I'd share some pictures
of our o so white kitchen we've been

living in for some time now.

 

Eerst en vooral wou ik zeggen hoe leuk ik
de reacties op mijn vorige post vind.
Ik geloof dat er een beetje een speurneus
in elk van ons schuilt.
Vandaag wou ik enkele foto's tonen

van de o zo witte keuken waar we

nu al enkele weken in leven.

 

 

Going through my pictures to find

some 'before' shots to go with the

'after' ones, I realized how much the kitchen 

has changed and how happy I am

that I did this huge job.

I poured the pictures into a collage

so you can really see the difference.

 

Toen ik doorheen mijn foto's bladerde

op zoek naar 'voor' foto's om bij de

'na' foto's te passen, besefte ik

pas goed wat voor grote transformatie

de keuken ondergaan heeft en hoe

blij ik ben met het resultaat na alle werk.

Ik goot de foto's in een collage

zodat het verschil goed naar voor komt.

 

 

There is still some pine present from the chairs and table

but that's nothing compared to the bath of pine

we were submerged in every single day before.

 

Er is nog wel wat grenen zichtbaar in de keuken

van de stoelen en de tafel maar dat is niets

vergeleken met het grenen bad waar we voordien

elke dag in ondergedompeld werden.

How painting can lead to more painting....

and to moving within your own house.

Hoe schilderen tot meer schilderen kan leiden....

en tot verhuizen in eigen huis.

 

 

The sunday before this I put the finishing touches to the kitchen cabinets

I started painting a while ago.

 

Vorige week zondag legde ik de laatste hand aan de

de keuken die ik een eind geleden begon te schilderen.

 

 

Here are some before and after impressions.

 

Hier zijn enkele voor en na indrukken.

 

 

No overall view just yet because at the time

the kitchen is covered and taped in again

since my painting the kitchen led to

more painting.

We decided to have the doors and woodwork

around the windows and the walls painted as well.

After thirteen years that was long overdue already really.

 

Een totaalbeeld ontbreekt nog want inmiddels

is de keuken grotendeels terug ingepakt

omdat de schilderwerken die ik aanvatte

een vervolg kregen.

Ook de deuren, raamomkastingen

en muren worden momenteel onder handen genomen.

Dat was echt wel eens nodig na dertien jaar.

 

 

A lot of prep work had and still has to been done first,

before the actual painting can start.

 

Eerst moest en moet nog heel wat voorbereidingswerk gebeuren

vooraleer met het schilderen zelf kan begonnen worden.

 

 

I would have loved to see these pipes

covered behind a wall

but they'll get painted instead,

as will the ugly holders they're in.

Hopefully when painted the same

colour as the wall, they won't be

such a frustrating element in the house anymore.

Impossible to have it all the way we'd want it right.

We have to do with what there is and make the best of it.

 

Ik had de chauffage buizen graag

weggewerkt gezien achter een wand

maar ze zullen meegeschilderd worden,

net als de lelijke houders waar ze in zitten.

Hopelijk zijn ze dan wat minder een doorn in het oog.

Zoals Gerry vorige week al schreef,

je kan niet alles hebben zoals je het wilt,

je moet het beste maken van wat er is.

 

 

The beautiful day we got today was great.

Instead of having to eat in the garage,

our temporary living room,

we could eat outside for the very first time this year.

 

De mooie dag vandaag was meegenomen.

Ipv in de garage, die voorlopig

dienst doet als woonkamer, konden we daardoor

voor het eerst dit jaar buiten eten.

Longing for spring in green and blue

 

Believe it or not but I could show you

snowcovered pictures again,

no, not old ones, brand new ones.

Yes, it's snowing again.

I didn't believe, didn't want to believe

the weatherforecaster when he told us

a few days ago, but he was right and

we are having snow, again.

 

Geloof het of niet maar ik zou jullie

opnieuw sneeuwfoto's kunnen tonen,

geen oude foto's, nieuwe foto's,

want het sneeuwde en sneeuwt vandaag opnieuw.

Ik geloofde het niet, wilde het niet echt geloven

toen de weerman het ons enkele dagen geleden voorspelde,

maar hij kreeg toch gelijk dit keer

en wij kregen en krijgen, nog maar eens, sneeuw.

 

 

 

 

I long for spring now

and with spring comes Easter

and with Easter come easter eggs.

So instead of snow,

I choose to show you easter eggs

if that's OK with you,

not the chocolate version yet,

those are for Easter,

but the decorative version.

 

Ik verlang naar de lente.

Geen lente zonder Pasen

en geen Pasen zonder paaseitjes.

Vandaar dat ik in de plaats van sneeuw

ervoor koos om jullie paaseitjes te tonen

als jullie het niet erg vinden.

Nog niet de chocoladen versie,

die zijn voor Pasen zelf,

maar de decoratieve versie.

 

 

 

 

No branches to hang the eggs from this year,

left those outside,

now covered in snow again,

I just stuck some easter eggs

on the wall with paper tape

and filled up a glass jar with the rest of it.

 

Geen takken om de eitjes aan te hangen dit jaar,

die liet ik buiten waar ze intussen

weer met sneeuw bedekt zijn.

Ik hing de eitjes gewoon met wat

papieren plakband aan de muur.

Met de rest ervan vulde ik een glazen vaas.

 

 

 

The blue eggs underneath are the first easter eggs

I ever bought, about 18 years ago.

Still love them. Blue may not

really be an Easter colour but

it goes perfectly with all the yellow

that appears every spring.

 

De blauwe eitjes hieronder zijn de allereerste paaseitjes

die ik kocht, zo'n 18 jaar geleden intussen.

Ik vind ze nog altijd mooi.

Al is blauw dan misschien niet een echte

paaskleur, het gaat wel goed samen

met alle geel dat in de lente

tevoorschijn komt.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I guess to me blue is the colour that fits every season

and I never get tired of.

 

Ik denk dat voor mij blauw een kleur van alle seizoenen is,
