The rain and the roses

 

Not really such a great combination I'm afraid.

 

Regen en rozen,

niet zo'n goede combinatie vrees ik.

 

 

 

 

It's so sad to see all the roses hang down.

Or is it just my fault? Did I choose the wrong roses for this climate?

Are there any roses that are more resilient to the rain?

 

Beetje triestig om alle rozen met hun kopjes naar beneden te zien hangen.

Of is het gewoon mijn eigen schuld? Koos ik de verkeerde rozen voor ons klimaat?

Zijn er rozen die wel beter tegen regen kunnen?

 

 

 

 

 

This rose is different, it doesn't let it's head hang but then again

once the rosebud has been drenched with rain, it doesn't produce a beautiful rose anymore. That happened twice already this year. Two rosebuds that were about to bloom

never came out but just turned brown and faded while still in the bud.

I'm sure it's because of the wet weather. The rose looks healthy otherwise.

It's the rose 'Waltz Time'. I saw it pop up into my list of popular posts on the right.

Now you know why I haven't shown any blooms from this rose yet this year.

 

Deze roos is anders, die laat het hoofd niet hangen maar aan de andere kant,

eens de knop doordrenkt is van de regen, komt er geen mooie bloem meer te voorschijn.

Dat is dit jaar al met twee van deze knoppen gebeurd. Twee knoppen die

een mooie bloem beloofden, kwamen uiteindelijk nooit tot bloei maar

verwelkten al nog in de knop. Ongetwijfeld door het natte weer.

Verder ziet de plant er wel helemaal gezond uit. Het is de roos 'Waltz Time'.

Ik zag ze toevallig opduiken tussen de populaire posts hier in de rechterkolom.

Nu is ook duidelijk waarom ik dit jaar nog geen mooi bloemen van deze roos

kon laten zien.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The rose above is Schneewittchen, also called Iceberg.

 

De roos hierboven is Schneewittchen, ook wel Iceberg genoemd.

 

 

 

 

 

And this is the rose Wife of Bath, in a far paler pink than it normally is.

It doesn't even differ so much from Scheewittchen at the time.

No burgundy blooms at the moment.

Munstead Wood is bloomed out for now.

 

En dit is nog eens de roos Wife of Bath, in een veel bleker roze dan normaal.

Er is zelfs niet zoveel verschil met de roos Schneewittchen nu.

Geen bordeaux bloei voor het ogenblik.

Munstead Wood is voorlopig uitgebloeid.

the border at the end of spring

 

 

 

 

 

This was the border a while ago. There's the pink from Geranium Endressi, some blue from the other Geraniums, some colourful dots from the last Columbines blooming and yellow from the Lady's Mantle starting to bloom. Seen as a total it looks a bit like an impressionist painting don't you think?

Maybe the 'edited' photos beneath give an even better impression.

 

Dit was de border een tijdje geleden. Er is roze van de Geranium Endressi, wat blauw van de andere Geraniums, enkele kleurrijke stippen van de laatste bloeiende Akeleien en geel van de Vrouwenmantel die net begint te bloeien. Als geheel gezien heeft het iets van een impressionistisch schilderij vind je ook niet?

Misschien geven de 'bewerkte' foto's hieronder die impressie nog beter weer.

 

 

 

 

Columbines are all faded by now, showing only green seedpods, and in many cases the Columbines have fallen to the ground. Only the yellow from Lady's Mantle and the pink from Geranium Endressi is left in the border. We'll have to wait for the Hydrangea's to start blooming to have some more colour again.

This was a little leap back into the past. I wanted to post this earlier but with the end of the schoolyear, things were a bit hectic as always and especially this year because our oldest was in his final year of highschool which he ended with beautiful results. Six years of Artschool which he took every saturday ended as well, for now at least. So we attended two 'goodbye' parties last week. He can be proud of what he's accomplished and of course we as parents are as well. From next year on, it will be all about history for him. That's what he chose to study which was no surprise to us at all. For our youngest daughter, there was also a choice to be made of which direction she was going to take into her studies, and after a long time of hesitating she finally made the decision, a decision we applaud. Our middle son is starting his final year in highschool next schoolyear, which is a special year I hope he will be able to bring to a good end as well. He still has no idea on what he'd want to study afterwards though. We hope that will become clearer as the year passes and he will be able to make the choice that's right for him. We will be there all the way to support him on this search.
Schoolbooks from the past schoolyear have been sold and secondhand books for the next year have been bought but those will remain untouched for now, as it is vacation! You wouldn't think that by looking at the weather though. We had a lot of rain again last night and all through the night. All the seedlings in their containers that finally started to grow have been beaten down by the rain. I had put the containers close together in the most sheltered place on the terrace and even added some support but that didn't help. Nothing much I can do about it now but wait and see. On a positive note this is the very first year I didn't have to water the plants in the garden at all yet. I normally have to start doing that from the month of May on because the clay soil in the garden becomes hard as a rock from then on but not this year. One question still though, did you see any butterflies yet this year? I haven't seen any sofar. They're probably waiting for nicer weather as well.


De Akeleien zijn intussen helemaal uitgebloeid, alleen de groene zaaddozen zijn nog zichtbaar maar veel Akeleien zijn ook omgevallen. Alleen het geel van de Vrouwenmantel en het roze van de Geranium Endressi is nog zichtbaar. Het is nu wachten tot de Hortensia's beginnen bloeien om weer meer kleur in de border te hebben.

Dit was even een sprong terug naar vorig seizoen. Het was iets wat ik al een tijdje wou posten maar met het einde van het schooljaar was het nogal druk en kwam ik helemaal niet aan bloggen of bloglezen toe. Vooral nu onze oudste zijn zes jaar middelbaar erop zitten heeft wat met de nodige luister gevierd werd natuurlijk. Hij sloot zijn zesde jaar af met een rapport dat gezien mag worden wat nog eens zo leuk is. Ook van de kunstacademie(deeltijds kunstonderwijs dat hij op zaterdag volgde en niet had willen missen) nam hij (voorlopig?) afscheid. Ook daar een afscheidsfeestje uiteraard. Hij kan trots zijn op wat hij bereikt heeft en dat zijn wij als ouders natuurlijk ook. Voor onze jongste dochter was het dan weer een studiekeuze maken wat toch belangrijk is en waar intussen de knoop is doorgehakt. Onze middelste zoon begint volgend schooljaar aan zijn laatste jaar middelbaar, toch een bijzonder jaar dat ook hij hopelijk goed zal afsluiten. Intussen zijn alle schoolboeken van vorig schooljaar doorverkocht en boeken voor het volgend schooljaar tweedehands aangekocht maar die blijven nog even onaangeroerd liggen want nu is het vakantie! Al zou je dat aan het weer niet zeggen. Vorige avond en nacht hadden we felle regen en daardoor zijn de zaaibloemen die eindelijk wat begonnen groeien in hun potten allemaal naar beneden geslagen. Ik had ze wat beschut en dicht bijeen gezet én steun voorzien maar dat kon niet baten. We zien wel wat er van komt. Maarre, hebben jullie dit jaar al vlinders gezien? Hier nog geen enkele. Wellicht wachten ook zij op mooier weer.
